Collagen is a natural protein that supports various parts of the human body: skin, joints, bones and ligaments. Collagen injection, patented by the Group under the trade name Zyderm collagen and Zyplast, is derived from purified bovine collagen. The purification process creates a product similar to human collagen. Collagen injection received approval from the Food and Drug Administration in 1981. Collagen is used primarily to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face and sometimes the neck, back and chest.
As the anesthetic lidocaine is mixed with collagen, additional anesthetic is usually not used. However, if you are particularly sensitive to pain, your doctor may use a topical anesthetic cream or spray for Freon numb the area injected. Or you can choose to have an injected local anesthetic or sedative drugs.
Treatment with collagen can begin after a skin test determines that you are not allergic to the substance. The collagen is injected using a needle inserted at several points along the edge of the site of treatment. If a local anesthetic was not used, you may feel some minor stinging or burning as the injections are administered.
